25th Anniversary of GSC
25th November 2018 – The Royal Regency in London

Heavy rainfall recorded in north eastern Bangladesh, exacerbated by a sudden increase of river water levels due to upstream flooding, resulted in severe flooding in Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts. Flooding affected the majority of upazilas in both districts, leading to severe infrastructure damage and acute needs. The villagers are struggling to overcome the staggering losses to crops and belongings they suffered.

The GSC arranged a fundraising appeal to help aid those affected in their time of need, this included collections at mosques and also live fundraising on Channel S.

The live fundraiser was well attended by various leaders of GSC and other guests who appealed to the public to donate. On a very successful night of fundraising over 20 thousand pounds was donated.

Iftar Mahfil 2018
3rd June 2018 – Brady Arts Centre, London

A Iftar gathering was arranged by the GSC Central Committee and The South East Region at the Brady Arts Centre. The gathering was well attended by many guests including The Mayor of Tower hamlets John Biggs, The Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets Cllr Sirajul Islam and Moulana Mohammed Abu Sayeed from the Islamic Shariah Council. Other guests included councillors from London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham. Various other leaders from the community and GSC leaders past and present also attended.

All guests expressed that Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, improvement and increased devotion and worship and that everyone should put more effort into the teachings of Islam and increase brotherhood.

Everyone broke there fast together to a wonderful meal arranged by the management. Money was also raised by appeal for poor people in Bangladesh.


Extended NEC Meeting
29th April 2018 – GSC Head Office

An Extended National Executive Committee meeting was held on 29th April at the central office of the organisation. A number of regional Chairmen’s, General Secretaries, Treasurers and Members took part in this extended meeting. Patron of the organisation Dr Hasanat M Hussain MBE and former Chairman Alhaj S M Alauddin Ahmed attended the event as special guests. 12 members from different regions where selected to be part of the NEC as Co-opted members. A 13 members Policy Review Committee was also formed to advice the Chairperson, General Secretary and Treasurer of the National Committee in emergency situations. Regional representatives gave an update on the activities of their regions. A decision was also taken to organise an Iftar Mahfil in Ramadan, to be organised by the Central Committee and The South East Region in London. In another proposal, Policy Review Committee was given the responsibility to plan, decide on the venue and budgeting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the organisation. The committee also decided to send a delegation team to Bangladesh High Commission to highlight the problems and miseries suffered by the Non-residents Bangladeshis.


25th Anniversary Discussion Meeting
21st April 2018 – GSC Head Office

A discussion meeting was held on the 25th Anniversary date of Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council UK. Everyone who attended the discussion meeting expressed their sweet wishes and greeted with flowers to the present Chairperson Barrister Ataur Rahman, Ex Chairperson and Patron Dr Hasanat M Hussain MBE and Ex Chairperson Alhaj M Alauddin Ahmed. A preliminary discussion took place on how to celebrate the Silver Jubilee with all the Regions and Branches.


Press Conference – Projects Launch
16th April 2018 – Six Ways Business Centre, Birmingham

On this date, a press conference was arranged by GSC West Midlands Region, who have taken lead to launch three projects, including Bangla classes to teach Bangladeshi expatriates new generation, drop In Session for Free advice and a project to help NRB’s with advice and legal matters in Bangladesh. A written statement was read out by the Central Chairperson, “Three necessary projects have been adopted in the West Midlands Region by the initiative of the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council UK as part of a plan to adopt various projects for the organization’s to bring more dynamic and community support.”


View exchange meeting with GSC Sunamgonj District Committee
15th April 2018 – Sunamganj

View exchange meeting was held with GSC Sunamgonj District Committee in presence of GSC Chief Charity Coordinator Mohammed Monchab Ali and GSC Sylhet District Chapter Chairperson Professor Saleh Ahmed. Various discussions took place to increase activities in the region.


GSC Sylhet District and Moulvibazar District Chapter view exchange meeting at Sylhet
14th April 2018 – Sylhet, Bangladesh

A view exchange meeting was held with GSC Sylhet District and Moulvibazar District Sylhet. Hosted by Abdul Matin, an Executive Committee Member of GSC Sylhet District. Present at the meeting where GSC Chief Charity Coordinator Mohammed Monchab Ali and GSC South East Region Chairperson Mohammed Isbah Uddin. The District Committee honoured Sylhet District Chairperson Professor Saleh Ahmed for his appointment as the Vice Principal of M C College. Also Presence was Moulvibazar District Chairperson Dr. Sadik Ahmed, Vice Chairperson Bokshi Iqbal and the General Secretary and Treasurer. The meeting were conducted by GSC Sylhet District General Secretary Abdus Samad Nazrul.


View Exchange Meeting with Mayor of Tower Hamlets Mr John Biggs
10th April 2018 – Tower Hamlets Council

A view exchange meeting of by of newly elected committee of Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council with Tower Hamlets Executive Mayor John Biggs and Deputy Mayor Sirajul Islam. Tower Hamlets Council’s cooperation is sought to implement and succeed various programs and programs for the expatriates and welfare of the expatriates in the views exchange meeting. In the meeting, Executive Mayor John Biggs assured the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council for the services and development of the community.


View Exchange Meeting with NTV
6th April 2018 – NTV Europe Studios, London

GSC held a view exchange meeting with NTV Europe authorities at NTV Europe’s London studio on Friday at 6 pm local time. A delegation of GSC inclduing Chairman Barrister Ataur Rahman attended the meeting. In exchange, NTV Europe CEO Sabrina Hussain, Director Mostafa Sarwar Babu and News Operation In charge and Head of Communication Ataullah Faruk along with other officials were present. The meeting sought cooperation between each other. Other topics in discussion, included education, health, industry, trade, social development and capital investment for the og Bangladesh after the liberation war, and the glorious role of the expatriate people, the contribution, the protection of expatriate interests and the right to demand and claim.


Celebrating 47th Independence & National Day of Bangladesh
4th April 2018 – GSC Head Office, London

Held at the GSC Head Office to celebrate and discuss the events of the day and how Bangladesh gained its independence. The event was well attended by past and present leaders of GSC who all shared stories and poems to celebrate the day. To mark the occasion a cake was cut and shared between everyone.


1st NEC Meeting
18th February 2018 – GSC Head Office, London

The newly elected National Executive Committee of the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council UK, held their 1st National Excecutive Meeting. The host regions Chairperson Mohammed Isbah Uddin welcomed everyone on this occasion. Then the meeting was convened by Barrister Ataur Rahman, promoting the unity, fraternity and harmony of the organization; how to mobilize the organization more and urging everyone to work together to ensure the fair demand including reciprocating the expatriates. In order to distribute the responsibilities of various posts of the National Executive Committee, Khusru Khan, general secretary, urged all to take part in the discussion. After detailed discussion at the meeting, the General Secretary announced and distributed the different posts to the committee. According to the constitution of the organization, the proposal to co-opt 12 people from different regions was approved unanimously. In order to facilitate expatriate services and organizational activities in different meetings, advance program for the next one year was taken and the decision was made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of GSC.

Present at this meeting where Patron K M Abu Taher Choudhury, Charity Coordinator and Ex Chairman Monchab Ali and Founding coordinator and Ex Chairman Alhaj M Alauddin. They expressed their hope that the newly elected committee will be able to restore the lost glory of the organization by restoring the tradition, unity, harmony, fraternity and will be able to preserve the rights of expatriates and act as a legitimate claimant and serve in the role of providing services.


Stand up to Racism & Islamaphobia
17th February 2018 – London

GSC leaders joined other protesters in their thousands on London to march against racism, islamophobia, anti-Semitism, justice for Grenfell, Donald Trump no state visit, black live matters, refugees & migrants, defending of free movement and unite against the fascists in Europe. Demonstrators, led by campaign group Stand Up to Racism, braved severe weather conditions across the UK to take to the streets for a number of marches on Saturday. Armed with banners and placards carrying messages such as “no to racism” and “unite and fight”, the protesters marched in solidarity with similar events in other European countries. Among those to speak at the event in the capital were prominent anti-racism campaigners, politicians and faith and community leaders, including GSC Chairperson Barrister Ataur Rahman.


Celebration Evening – Celebrating the first elected General Secretary from West Midlands Region
13th February 2018 – Iqbal Banqueting

A celebration evening was held by GSC West Midland Region Committee to mark the first Central General Secretary from West Midlands Region. Various leaders from various organisations and different regions of GSC attended the celebration event. The joyous evening was also marked with the introduction to the new central committee of GSC. Various other organisations presented the new committee with flowers as a way of congratulations.


Binniel General Meeting & Elections 2018
25th February 2018 – Bangla Centre Manchester

The election of delegate-voters of the Greater Sylhet Development and Welfare Council was held on 25th of February 2018, with heavy contest and much enthusiasm. The contest was held between two panels Rose Symbol was set for Ataur-Khusru-Saleh and Mahbub-Mokis-Rana was given Chair Symbol to contest in the election. From the total 430 delegates of GSC’s 12-regions, 377 votes was casted in the election. The Rose Panel (Ataur-Khusru-Saleh) won the election and Barrister Ataur Rahman became Chairperson, Khusru Khan General Secretary and Saleh Ahmed Treasurer, they polled 192, 187, 196 votes respectively. Their nearest contestants Nurul Islam Mahbub got 177 votes as a Chairman, Monsur Mokis received 182 as a General Secretary and Habibur Rahman Rana got 171 as a Treasurer. Election was also held for 32-Member National Executive Committee, from which 29 members from Ata–Khasru-Saleh Panel and 3 members from Mahbub-Mokis-Rana Panel was elected to be part of the National Executive Committee.
